Etsy Message to Buyers: Templates That Do the Job
Etsy's Message to Buyers is your one guaranteed touchpoint. Get five plug-and-play templates for handmade, vintage, digital, personalized, and supplies shops, plus which messages需要

Etsy gives every shop one built-in automatic message: the Message to Buyers, which goes out with the order confirmation the moment someone purchases. Most shops either leave it empty or paste something generic; both waste the single guaranteed touchpoint you get with every buyer. Here is how to use it well, plus how to handle the Etsy messages that actually need a human.
What the Message to Buyers is (and is not)
In Shop Manager, under your shop settings, Etsy lets you write a note that is automatically included with every order confirmation. Buyers see it right after purchasing, which makes it your thank-you note, your expectation-setter, and your first line of defense against "where is my order" messages, all in one.
What it is not: a reply system. It cannot answer questions, it does not know what the buyer bought beyond the order it rides on, and it sends identically to everyone. Anything conversational still happens in Etsy Messages, person to person.
What a good one contains
Three jobs, a few sentences each: thank them like a human (this is Etsy; buyers chose a small shop on purpose), set the timeline expectation (processing time plus shipping reality), and tell them how to reach you. Skip discount codes for next time (that is a different message, later) and skip apologizing in advance for delays you have not had.
Five templates by shop type
Handmade, made-to-order:
Thank you so much for your order! Everything in the shop is made to order, so your [item] enters the queue today and ships within [X] business days. You will get tracking the moment it goes out. Questions or a custom request? Message me here anytime, I read everything.
Vintage:
Thank you for giving this piece its next home! Your order ships within [X] business days, carefully packed. Vintage items have lived a life, so if anything about the condition surprises you when it arrives, message me first and I will make it right.
Digital downloads:
Thank you for your purchase! Your files are available right now: go to You > Purchases and reviews, and the download button is next to the order. If the button has not appeared or a file gives you trouble, message me and I will sort it within the day.
Personalized/custom:
Thank you for your order! One quick thing: please double-check the personalization details in your order confirmation now. If anything needs fixing, message me within [X] hours, because after that your piece goes into production exactly as written.
High-volume supplies shop:
Thanks for your order! It ships within [X] business days from [location]. Combining orders or need a bulk quantity that is not listed? Message me before it ships and I will adjust things where I can.
The messages the auto-note cannot handle
The Message to Buyers prevents the routine questions. What remains in your Etsy inbox is the real work: custom requests, "will this arrive by [date]" gift-deadline questions, condition questions, and the occasional problem order. The rules there are the same as every marketplace: answer fast (Etsy surfaces responsiveness to buyers), answer the actual question with the actual order's facts, and sound like the human they deliberately bought from. Etsy buyers chose handmade partly to talk to a person; a canned reply stings more here than anywhere.
For shops where the inbox is becoming the job, that is the problem we build for: Reply Copilot drafts each reply with the order context filled in, in your voice, and it is live for eBay sellers today. Etsy support is on the roadmap, and the Etsy waitlist gets one email the day it ships.
FAQ
Where do I set the Message to Buyers on Etsy? In Shop Manager, in your shop's settings, in the section for order confirmation text (Etsy has moved it between menus over the years; search "message to buyers" in Shop Manager help if it is not where you expect).
Can Etsy automatically reply to buyer messages? Etsy offers auto-reply when you set your shop to vacation or away mode, and the Message to Buyers rides on order confirmations. Regular incoming questions do not get automatic answers; those are yours.
Should I put a discount code in the Message to Buyers? Better to save it for a follow-up moment (an insert card, or a thank-you after delivery). The confirmation message works best doing exactly three things: thanks, timeline, and how to reach you.
How fast should I answer Etsy messages? Within 24 hours as a floor, faster during gift seasons when a slow answer costs the sale. Buyers with deadlines message several shops and buy from whoever answers first with a real answer.
