eBay Away Messages Done Right: Setup + 5 Templates

Every seller eventually faces the vacation problem: buyers expect fast answers, and you expect to occasionally have a life. eBay's answer is Time Away, and used well it keeps your metrics and your feedback intact while you are gone. Used badly (or not at all), a week off can generate a month of cleanup.

How Time Away works on eBay

In your account settings you will find Time Away (under selling preferences). It does two separate things, and the distinction matters:

  1. The dates: you set a start and end. During that window, eBay can display your away status to buyers.
  2. The big choice: keep selling while away, or pause your listings. If you keep selling, buyers can purchase but should expect slower handling; eBay adjusts your handling time expectations for the window you set. If you pause, fixed-price listings are hidden or blocked from purchase until you return.

There is also the automatic response: while Time Away is active, buyers who message you can receive your away message automatically, which is where most sellers underinvest. eBay fills in a generic line; you can do much better.

Rule of thumb for the big choice: keep selling for trips under a week if someone can still ship within your handling time or shortly after; pause for anything longer, for fragile categories, or when nobody can access inventory. An unexpected sale you cannot ship for twelve days costs more in feedback than a week of hidden listings costs in revenue.

What a good away message does

A good away message answers the three things an unanswered buyer actually worries about: did a human see this, when will I get a real answer, and is my order still happening? Every template below does all three. Keep it short; nobody wants your itinerary.

1. Short trip, still shipping

Thanks for your message! I am away until [date], but orders are still shipping on schedule, and I am checking messages once a day. You will have a full answer within 24 hours. If your question is about an order already placed, rest assured it is being handled normally.

2. Away, listings paused

Thanks for reaching out! The shop is taking a short break and reopens on [date]. I will reply personally within a day of returning. Existing orders have all shipped; if your message is about one of them, include the item name and I will prioritize it the moment I am back.

3. Holiday rush honesty

Thanks for your message! It is the busy season and replies are taking up to [X] hours right now, though orders are still shipping within [X] business days. If you are asking about a delivery date for a gift, include your deadline and I will flag your order.

4. Family emergency / unexpected absence

Thank you for your patience. The shop is dealing with an unexpected closure and replies are delayed until [date]. All existing orders [have shipped / will ship by (date)]. I am sorry for the wait and will make it right when I am back.

5. Weekend rhythm

Thanks for your message! The shop answers messages Monday to Friday; you will hear from me first thing [Monday]. Orders placed over the weekend ship [Monday/Tuesday]. If it is urgent and about an existing order, put URGENT in your message and I will get to it first.

The part the away message cannot do

An away message buys patience; it does not answer anything. The pile is still waiting when you get back, and day-one-back is where feedback risk actually lives: forty messages answered fast, tired, and off-voice. That reentry is where Reply Copilot pulls its weight: each queued message gets a drafted reply with the order and tracking details already filled in, so clearing the backlog takes minutes and every reply still sounds like your shop rather than your jet lag.

FAQ

Does eBay have an auto-reply for messages? Yes, through Time Away: while it is active, buyers who message you can get your away message automatically. Outside Time Away, eBay does not auto-reply on your behalf.

Should I pause my eBay listings while on vacation? Pause for absences longer than about a week, for fragile or high-touch items, or when nobody can ship at all. Keep selling for short trips where handling can stretch slightly; eBay adjusts expected handling for your Time Away window.

Does using Time Away hurt my eBay search ranking? Pausing listings means no sales during that window, and sales velocity influences visibility, so a long pause can have a temporary effect. It is still far cheaper than the defect rate and negative feedback of selling with nobody home.

How far in advance can I schedule Time Away? You can schedule it ahead in your account settings; setting it before you leave (rather than mid-flight) is the difference between a plan and an apology.
